Off-Grid Timber Frame House with Straw Infill - Burhaniye, Balıkesir
The house with a timber structure and straw bale infill is an independent 60 m² dwelling, located in Burhaniye, in the village of Kırtık, and fully autonomous from the electrical grid. The building is equipped with solar panels, a rainwater harvesting system, sustainable waste management, and a permaculture garden.
The stone-built infrastructure supports the entire structural load of the building. The house is oriented towards the south, offering direct views of the olive groves and the Edremit Bay. The timber load-bearing structure combined with the use of straw bales as a natural insulating material ensures the breathability of the building, providing thermal comfort—warm in winter and cool in summer.
A lime-based plaster is used on the exterior, while earth plaster is applied on the interior. The large glazed openings are designed to enhance both the southern exposure and the surrounding views. Greywater from the bathroom and kitchen is treated and reused for land irrigation through a natural system of gravel beds and reed beds. On the eastern side of the building, a productive vegetable garden is planned for the cultivation of seasonal crops, while almost the entire energy demand of the house is met by the solar panels.
