Renovation of former Hotel Gran Baita in Cervinia

The project's goal is originally renovation of Ex hotel Gran Baita in Cervinia. The hotel was very famous in ski resort and it will be attraction again. The new building will reflect the original urban planning of Cervinia, this part is very close to Bardoney which was very small village but now a days there is a residences and people can use this new cultural center. The position of the building is maintained and main axes are protected. The new structure is a complex building, half part will be museum and other part will be the cable car station again. Multifunctionality is one of the key point of the proposal, cable car will be very crowd and utilizable so there will be sound problem but at the same time museum will be silence and for this reason rooms floor and the wall thickness will on equilibrium.
One of the main problem was building had different facades and there wasn't any persistence in the facades.In new project there is a continuity facade with using three different materials for separate the functions but protecting integrity in external parts. Rock masonry facade will cover to basement and ground floor, concrete part will be on first and second floor, narrow windows are used again but in a different rhythm. Ground floor, first and second floor will be museum and third floor will be library, common space and small concert hall all of them are looking to Matterhorn. Inside the building span between the pillars are around 7 -8 meters and reinforce concrete is used on pillars and beams. Also third floor is double height and it has large windows for having maximum field of view to the outside. There is double height in second and third floors, these inside balconies will increase light amount and will have different angles to see internal part and environment. There is an underground floor which has half office part and temporary museum part. Also people can use car parking in -2nd and -3rd floors. Car parking will reach directly to the museum and cable car station, which will be good condition for protecting from bad weather conditions. There was three different cable car stations and now they were demolished and built one main cable car station. The position will be same but added a new concrete pa rt to the North East side of station which will protect cable car from snow and rain. Cervinia's weather is -10 during the winter so building has double glazed windows in each floors. The roof has traditional wooden roof structure for having insulation with using natural material and also having a nice and soft atmosphere in the third floor. In this floor people can use library, balcony and they can participate to concert hall. The museum will connect people in same place and help them to increase their cultural activity. Around 700 people permanently live in Cervinia and this new complex building will change the silhouette of town. Generally people goes to Valtournenche for having a cultural activity or going to library. In this proposal Cervinia won't be just ski center.
After all the renovation process I consider to feasibility of structure. New function will come and new structure will be stronger than old one. The city usability will change. Using the wood, concrete and stone will continue the history and increase the sustainability. Also this type of materials reflect the Italian Alpine architecture, having the style of Alpine architecture is one of the main goal in this proposal.
